Maria Bronfman Obituary

Maria Luisa Queralt Bronfman died peacefully on August 31, holding her daughter's hand. Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1932, her childhood was marked by the Spanish Civil War and Franco's Spain. In response, she developed a strong anti-authoritarian streak and a fearless approach to life. She emigrated to Brazil as a young woman, and then moved to Argentina when she married José Bronfman. Her children, Marcos, Sandra and Nuria were born in Argentina, and the family, including her mother, emigrated again to the United States. They lived in Cambridge, MA for one year, and then moved to Maryland, where they settled. She worked as a secretary in the Argentine consulate, an art teacher at the Washington International School, and a real estate agent. She lived aesthetically and created beauty in her homes and gardens, finding joy as well in art, dance, food, tennis, and her friends. She taught her children to be both independent and loyal and selflessly gave them her time and attention. After her divorce she found love again with Colin Walters, a writer and journalist, as well as her dog Elena, who became a constant companion. Her final act included her service for the Hispanos of Leisure World, volunteering as a hospital translator, painting, enjoying her grandchildren Max, Henry, Maia and Zach, developing strong opinions about tennis players, caring for her friends and honing her considerable Rummikub skills. The warmth and generosity with which she lived remains in the hearts of those she has left behind.
