Mara Elena Oliver de Cabassa (Malen) passed away peacefully at her residence, surrounded by her family, on the morning of Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on December 6, 1920, she was 104 years old. Malen was the devoted wife to Jacobo Cabassa, who predeceased her in 2009. Together, they leave a profound legacy of love through their five children, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Malen will be fondly remembered by many relatives, in Puerto Rico, Guatemala and the United States, whose lives she profoundly touched.
Malen attended Immaculata College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She married Jacobo Cabassa in 1942, and they lived in Ponce, Puerto Rico. They enjoyed family gatherings, beach summers in Santa Cruz, mountain visits, featuring listening to coquis at night, and swimming in cool rivers.
Malen's life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, family, and joyous moments. She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, always putting her family at the center of her world. Her wisdom and kindness were a guiding light for her descendants, who often sought her advice and shared their milestones with her.
In 1959, the family relocated to South Miami. Their home was lively with music, conversation, laughter, and Latin cuisine. New Year's Eve featured a parade in Downtown Miami and a festive party.
After Jacobos retirement, they started traveling in their motor home around the states, especially the Carolinas. Their grandchildren enjoyed summer trips to campsites and places like Disney World. These adventures are often fondly remembered by the grandchildren.
Malen loved to visit her children at their homes and participated in events such as births, baptisms, First Communions, and weddings. She had a deep appreciation for Guatemala, where her eldest son married and began his family life. Malen was loved by many there for her cheerful and humorous personality. She enjoyed the natural settings such as rivers, the sea, and the countryside. At the age of 95, she accompanied her eldest son, his wife and their daughter on a sailing trip to the keys of Belize for a week.
She will be remembered for her grace and dedication to God. As a parishioner of Epiphany Catholic Church, she served as a Eucharistic Minister, visited the elderly, welcomed seminarians, and provided comfort and companionship. Her home was also the prayer center for the 'Ladies of the Rosary,' who met weekly to pray for all intentions.
