Maria Luz Sosa Carpenter, age 82, of Cibolo, Texas passed away peacefully, with her husband at her side, on November 29, 2023. Maria Luz was born on January 6, 1941, in Cotulla, Texas. She was a devoted Christian, wife, sister, sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, and friend.
Maria Luz was a graduate of Cotulla High School and a Who’s Who, Suma Cum Laude graduate at Sul Ross State University where she graduated in 1971, in two-and-half years. In 1972, she married her childhood friend, George A. Carpenter, Jr. The couple began their married life in Houston, where she worked in Houston ISD and he in Spring Branch ISD. In 1980, The couple returned to Cotulla to manage a family business for thirteen years. During their marriage, the couple moved to Houston, Cotulla, Austin, Dallas, Duncanville, Uvalde, Houston, and Cibolo. Maria Luz lived a life like the biblical Ruth and followed wherever George went. A devoted, loving wife for fifty-one years.
Maria Luz is survived by her husband, Dr. George A. Carpenter, Jr.; sister-in-law, Eunice Sosa; brother Jose Sosa, wife Becky; brother Juan Sosa, wife Isilda; Dr. Isaac Sosa, wife Sameta; brother-in-law, Joaquin Carpenter, wife Elva; brother-in-law, Roland Carpenter, wife Diana. She will be missed by numerous nephews and nieces. Maria Luz is preceded in death by her parents Ismael Sr. and Virginia Garcia Sosa, sister Estella Sosa McNabb, husband Bill (deceased); brother Ismael Sosa Jr., and brother Antonio Sosa.
The family would like to thank her caregiver Dora Medina as well as her doctors Dr. Nicholaas Anderson, Dr. Orlando Fonseca, Dr. Isaac Sosa, Dr. Orlando Kypuros, and Dr. Ismael Sosa III for their support during the past six years. Maria struggled with the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s/Dementia for several years and put up a valiant effort to survive until the very end. Her big heart just would not give up.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances, and memorials for Maria Luz donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of your choice.
The family will receive visitors at Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary Uvalde, 220 S. Getty Street, Uvalde 78801, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, from 3:00 to 9:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the funeral home. A reception will take place immediately following interment at the Bird Bath Section of Hillcrest Cemetery in Uvalde.
Pallbearers will be Ismael Tres Sosa, Josh Sosa, Anthony Sosa, Joab Sosa, Ryan Cox and Landon Cox.
