Maria Mateus, 78, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Jose A. Mateus.
Born in Matela, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Luis and Maria Beatrice (Ferreira) Fonseca. She came to this country in 1961 settling in Cumberland and had been residing in Pawtucket since 1984.
Maria enjoyed gardening, and taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was employed as a inspector and packer for Osram Sylvania, Central Falls until her retirement. She was previously employed as a supervisor by the former Crown Spinning of Central Falls.
She is survived by her son Steven Fonseca and his wife Colleen of Pawtucket, her two sisters: Maria H. Gomes of Faial, Azores, Prazeres Monson of Attleboro, her three brothers: John Fonseca, and Jose Fonseca both of Cumberland and Amadeu Fonseca of Attleboro. Her two grandchildren, Samantha Fonseca-Bodwell of Lincoln, and Steven L. Fonseca of Pawtucket and her great granddaughters who she adored, Sofia, Talia and Riley all of Lincoln, along with many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Lidia Fonseca of Attleboro.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Maria's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 4 PM to 7 PM and continuing on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Drive Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
