It is with deep sadness and much love that we announce the passing of Luis "Luchito" Mateus, 84, of
Glen Oaks, New York, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2025.
Born in Machachi, Ecuador, on July 1, 1941, he was the sixth of eight children born to Mercedes and Luis Mateus. At the age of 23, Luis bravely immigrated to the United States. He spent a few early years in California before settling in New York City, where he began a long and dedicated career at Steinway and Sons in Astoria, Queens. His natural carpentry skills, honed by his father, served him well as he took on various roles during his 40 years of service before his retirement.
A lifelong learner and natural "fixer," Luis pursued studies at Devry on the weekends, earning his certification as an electronics technician, a skill he utilized throughout his life. He was the family and factory go-to expert for repairs, known for his generosity in often refusing payment. Luis was a dedicated reader of The Daily News, staying abreast of national and international news. He was known for his contagious laughter and funny stories, and he cherished spending his free time watching action movies and simply being with his family. The years he spent in retirement with his beloved wife and three granddaughters were truly the happiest time of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ana Rytha; his children, Luis Carlos (Michele) and Ann Marie (Paul); his three cherished granddaughters, Isabella, Salma, and Sophia; and his siblings, Polivio, Clemencia, and Mercedes.
Luis was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Mercedes, his sisters, Hilda, Cecilia, and Piedad, and his brother, Carlos.
A funeral mass will be held at his parish of 50 years, Our Lady of the Snows Church in Floral Park, Queens. He will be forever in our hearts.
