Maria Alicia Valdes was born March 26 th, 1927. She died peacefully after saying her last
goodbyes to her devoted family on Saturday, November 1st, All Saints Day. It was a
perfect day for her journey home to her final resting place. Twenty-five years previously,
Alfonso Valdes, her husband, was interred on November 1st, 2000, at Calvary Hill,
making All Saints Day even more extraordinary and providential for the surviving family
members. Alicia was a native of Laredo Texas. She began her life as a professional
executive assistant having earned the equivalent of an associate's degree from Laredo
University. On June 21, 1952, she married Alfonso Valdes, and they began their life
together committed to faith and family. As a couple they were devout Catholics, always
involved in church ministry with a focus on sharing the Catholic faith to strengthen
families, married couples and the Hispanic community. Alicia was predeceased by her
husband, Alfonso Valdes, her son-in-law, Michael McClurg, and her granddaughter,
Caitlin McClurg. Alicia is survived by two loving and devoted sisters, Elsa Martinez and
Mina Martel and a large family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who
will miss her dearly. Surviving children and their families are:
Alicia's oldest daughter Anna Cavnar/spouse Chris and their children: Marlo
Vernon/spouse David and son Linus McNeil and daughters Marilla Clare, Margaret
Catherine, Louisa Mae, Imogen DiRosa, Isla Dorothea, and Carys Isobel; Monica Laine
Contreras/spouse Gabriel and children Aurora Laine and Antonio Fued; Sons Kyle
Cavnar and Jason Cavnar.
Daughter Sara Marotto/spouse Danny and their children: Bryan Marotto/spouse
Christin; Jennifer Hargis/spouse Doug and daughter Gracie Hulsey; Amanda
Collins/spouse Greg and daughter Ady; Johnny Marotto /spouse Jenni and their
daughter Mary Juliet, and sons James Lincoln and Johnny Maverick.
Daughter Maria McClurg and her sons Josh McClurg/ fiancée Son Troung; Scott
McClurg/spouse Kim Ly; and Caitlin Smith survived by spouse Charles Smith II and
their children Ariel Rose and Charles Smith III.
Son Al Valdes/spouse Laurie and children: Robin Monique Valdes and her sons Caiden
Christopher, Maddox Gabriel, and Brooksten Alexander Manley; Zachary Valdes/spouse
Amber and their sons August, Landon, and Ephram Valdes; Krystina Elaine Valdes;
granddaughter Mayliyah Khaliud.
Youngest daughter Patricia Ann Biles/spouse John and their daughters Isabella and
Charlotte.
Although sad to leave us, she looked forward to being part of the great community of
saints. Her headstone is inscribed "My soul rests in God Alone" and we will celebrate
her life and final journey on Thursday, November 13th at St Patrick Catholic Church in
Dallas, Texas. The viewing and rosary will be at 9:00am followed by Mass at 10:00am,
celebrated by Father Charles Githinji.
Immediately following Mass, graveside services and burial will take place at Calvary Hill
Cemetery. Maria Alicia Valdes will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Alfonso,
finally home at last.
