Scotia- Maria T. Wierzbowski, 83, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025, at Ellis Hospital.
Born on June 11, 1942, in Hamburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Jan and Salomea (nee: Mazgaj) Szostak.
Maria spent her early years in Wieprz, Poland where she attended school.
Maria's journey brought her to the United States in 1968, where she immediately found a job as a master seamstress, a trade that allowed her to express her creativity and precision. Her industrious nature later led her to employment with General Electric Research and Development as a cleaner. Maria's passion for helping others also inspired her to study nursing.
Throughout her life, Maria's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew her. She found solace and joy in maintaining her trees and plants and tending to her garden and pond. Her hands, always busy, created beautiful wreaths and quilts that were not only a testament to her skill but also a warm embrace for those she loved.
Family was the cornerstone of Maria's world. She cherished the time spent with her loved ones, creating memories that would be treasured for generations. Her home was a haven of warmth and laughter, where family gatherings were filled with the sounds of polka music playing on records, and stories of Poland.
In addition to her parents, Maria was predeceased by her husband, Zygmunt Wierzbowski, who passed in 1993 and her brothers, John Szostak, Eugene Szostak and Edward Szostak.
She is survived by her sons, Edward Wierzbowski (Gina) and Adam Wierzbowski (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Kirsten Wierzbowski, Zara Wierzbowski, Luca Wierzbowski and Ayla Wierzbowski; her sister, Zofia Wronka and dear cousin, Kathleen Chastney.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 1pm at the chapel at Memory Gardens, Colonie, followed by interment.
Memorial contributions may be made in Maria's name to the Glenville Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 1086 Church Road, Glenville, NY 12302.
