Marianne H. Vagts, 88, a beloved mother, grandmother, and community figure, passed away on November 16, 2025, at UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. Born on March 6, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, Marianne led a life filled with dedication to both her family and her work, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Marianne’s professional journey began as a teacher in Damascus, PA. She later made a significant impact as a cafeteria manager at Deposit Central School District, serving the community for over 40 years until her retirement. Her commitment to nurturing the next generation extended beyond the classroom; she took great pride in her role and was respected by colleagues and students alike.
Throughout her life, Marianne enjoyed a variety of hobbies including cooking, baking, and traveling. She cherished moments spent with her grandchildren, often creating lasting memories alongside them. Marianne particularly appreciated the sunny days, when she would ask her son, Karl, to take her for rides around the local area, relishing in the beauty of her surroundings.
Marianne attended SUNY Delhi University, where she earned her associates degree, a testament to her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and growth. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, and frequently shared joyful stories and reflections with friends and family, recounting adventures from her past and sharing her enthusiasm for life.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Hess, and her son, Karl H. Vagts Jr, daughter, Karin (Dick) Garrigan, and son, Kurt (Danielle) Vagts. Her grandchildren, Katharina (Brian) Card, Alexander Hess (Julia-Beth), Kalvin Vagts, Kannon Vagts, and Montana Vagts, along with her great-granddaughter, Magnolia Card, carry on her spirit and shared her pride.
Marianne is preceded in death by her husband, Karl H. Vagts Sr., her son-in-law, Tim Hess, and her parents, Dietrich and Frida Koester.
The visitation for Marianne will be held on November 20, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, both taking place at Hennessey's Funeral Home located at 78 2nd St., Deposit, NY 13754.
Marianne H. Vagts will be remembered fondly for her warmth, kindness, and indelible mark on her family and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Karena Trimbell and the staff at Delaware Valley Hospital and UHS Wilson Hospital.
