"A Life Rooted in Faith, Family, and Love"
Alice Marie Thompson Comte, 77, of Newnan, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord at her residence on October 20, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born December 6, 1947, in Newnan to Janie Chesnut Thompson of Moreland and John Henry Thompson of Newnan, Marie's life was one of grace, devotion, and quiet strength.
She grew up in Newnan, where she graduated from Newnan High School and later earned her Master's Degree in Education from the University of West Georgia. For thirty years, she poured her heart into teaching elementary students, shaping young minds with patience, encouragement, and compassion. Her gentle humor, deep empathy, and steadfast faith left lasting marks on generations of children and colleagues alike.
In 1970, Marie married the love of her life, Thomas Joseph Comte of East St. Louis, Illinois. Together they built a marriage of 55 years, grounded in faith and unconditional love. She was a devoted mother to Kelly Scott Comte (deceased), Matthew Ryan Comte (Sunny Lichty Comte), and Katie Comte Platt (Keith Platt), and a joyful grandmother to Thomas, Mattie, and David Comte; Elsa, Hadley, and Jorden Platt-adopting others along the way, each of whom knew her kitchen as a place of cookies, stories, and endless love.
Known for her kindness, humility, and wit, Marie found joy in life's simple gifts: gardening, sewing, antiquing, and spending long afternoons at Lake Wedowee with family and friends. Her home bloomed with carefully tended flowers and countless succulents, each one a living reflection of her nurturing spirit. She believed in loving without condition, serving others freely, finishing what you start, and never stopping the pursuit of learning.
Marie's faith guided her every step. As a devoted member of SonRise Baptist Church, she led with quiet service-teaching, mentoring, and sharing her gift for ministry through small groups and women's programs. She also gave her time to the Kiwanis Club of Newnan and served as local president of the Georgia Association of Educators.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; children Matthew, Sunny, Katie, and Keith; her cherished grandchildren; and her siblings Jimmy Thompson, David (Elaine) Thompson, and Ann Thompson. She was deeply loved by her nieces and nephews-Melanie Perry, Alex Perry, Alice Abbott, Gary Abbott, Garrett Abbott, Claire Abbott, Julie and Henderson Hope, Jody Thompson, Janet Cotney, and Jeana Roberts. Marie is also survived by Sunny's sister, Sam Smallhorn, and her husband Kevin, and their children Charlie and Molly, who were loved as her own family.
Visitation will be held at SonRise Baptist Church, 6 Shenandoah Blvd E, Newnan, GA 30265, at 12:00 PM on Thursday, October 23, 2025, followed by a service celebrating her life at 2:00 PM, with interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 656 Roscoe Road, Newnan, GA 30263. Dr. Tim Riordan and Rev. Skeeter Thompson will officiate. All who know Marie are warmly welcomed to attend.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate teams at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Encompass Rehabilitation, Newnan Health and Rehabilitation, Family Hospice, and her devoted caregivers Priscilla Williams and Shantrella Tolbert for their exceptional care.
Her love was constant, her faith unshakable, and her legacy eternal. Rest in peace, Marie.
