, a faithful servant of the Lord and cherished matriarch, entered the arms of her Savior on her birthday, August 11, 2025. Born in Morris Chapel (Hookers Bend), Tennessee on August 11, 1941, she was the daughter of Mattie Delores Brashears and William Thomas Holt. Their families-established in Tennessee since the late 1800s, renowned for educators, doctors, and community leaders-and a family of expansive farm owners, Josephine inherited a legacy of faith, learning, and stewardship. Her mother later married Autrie Burdine, Sr., who became her beloved and bonus dad for life. From this union, she became the eldest daughter of 17 siblings (Iva, Peggy, Autrie, Jr., Charles, Cornell, William, Otis, Mary, Carl, Leon, Donna, Jerome, Lisa, Vanessa, Kevin and Rita) in whom she was affectionately known as 'Jo'.
A 1959 graduate of Central High School in
Cincinnati, Ohio, Josephine's creativity and compassion shone early, excelling in Psychology and home economics. In 1960, at Antioch Baptist Church, she married Walter Butler Sr. Their union was blessed with three children: Chery, Walter Jr., and Carroll. Josephine was an excellent seamstress, pouring her love into every stich, sewing gowns, upholstery and even daughter Carroll's entire wedding party gowns with patience and her gifted hands alongside her sister, Iva. Cooking from her heart, Josephine used her kitchen to teach her granddaughters how to bake. Her legendary southern chess pie-a family secret since her Tennessee childhood-and her incomparable holiday potato salad became touchstones of shared family memories. In every spoonful, her family tasted her love.
Josephine was a professionally schooled and trained secretary for decades, spending her last 21 working years at HCR Manor Care - Madeira, retiring only to be asked to return back for 5 more years, a testament to her unwavering dedication and kind spirit. As a church mother at Greater Grace Christian Ministry Church, she ministered without reservation-sending cards, offering prayers, and embodying Christ's compassion to new members, the sick, and the shut-ins. Everyone would affectionately describe her as incredibly sweet and kind; a mother to all.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Annie (Ma Minnie) Orr; mother, Mattie Dolores (Brashears) Burdine; father, William Thomas Holt; bonus dad, Autrie Burdine, Sr; son, Walter Scott Butler Jr.; sisters, Donna and Lisa Burdine; brothers, Charles, William and Jerome Burdine.
Josephine's legacy lives on through her daughters Chery Jean McCain (son-in-law, Derek McCain) and Carroll Jean Talbert (Stephen); her grandchildren Stephanie Talbert, Tanisha Butler, Jessica McCain, Derek McCain, Anthony Talbert and Aysha Butler; eight great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who affectionately recognized her as a grandmother figure.
"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
One word, yet it carries so much meaning. It holds a lifetime of love, sacrifice, comfort, and care. It's the voice that soothes you when you're hurting, the hands that hold you when you're weak, and the heart that loves you without conditions. Mama is more than a name. It's a promise, a shelter, and a love that never fades.
