Marie Olson Spencer, born on February 14, 1948, in Bismarck, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, after a courageous battle with multiple health conditions. She was surrounded by love, with her daughter Paula "Mickey" Spencer and sister Dorothy Thompson by her side during her final moments.
A dedicated professional, Marie retired from her esteemed role as a Reference Librarian with the New Hanover County Public Library in Wilmington, North Carolina, after 27 impactful years of service. Her commitment to education was evident early in her life; she graduated from Jesup Community School in Iowa before earning her bachelor's degree in history from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. She further pursued her passion for knowledge by acquiring a master's degree in library science from NC Central University.
Marie was known for her kind and open-hearted nature. She had a unique ability to connect with people and never met a stranger. Her home was a welcoming place, where she became not just a mother to Mickey, but also a nurturing figure to many of Mickey’s friends. Marie’s zest for learning never waned; she embraced lifelong education and was always eager to discover new interests.
Alongside her career and supportive role in the lives of those around her, Marie found immense joy in reading and writing. She cherished the opportunities to travel, with a memorable highlight being her trip of a lifetime to England with Mickey in 2002.
Marie is survived by her beloved children: daughter Paula "Mickey" Spencer and son Durwood Spencer; stepdaughters Brenda, Angenora, Audrey, and Sandra; and a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever carry her spirit. She is also mourned by her siblings, Dorothy Thompson, Kenneth Olson (Therese), Raymond Olson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Spencer; her parents, Raymond and Naomi Olson; her sister, Julie Truog; and her brother, Dennis Olson.
Her legacy of kindness, curiosity, and love for learning will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Marie Olson Spencer will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who are grateful for the time shared and the memories created together.
