Marie E. Whetsel, age 102, peacefully entered her heavenly home on Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Waters of Dunkirk.
Born in Wilshire, Ohio, on September 6, 1923, Marie was the beloved daughter of Phillip and Florence (Koos) Rash. She married Kenneth L. Whetsel, Sr. on February 28, 1947, who predeceased her on September 16, 2005.
Marie dedicated 21 years of her life to Kerr Glass Company in Dunkirk, where she worked as a secretary until her retirement in 1985. Her commitment to service extended beyond her career; she was a active member of the former Bethel United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, where she became the church organist in 1960, serving in that role for over 62 years. Her deep faith and devotion inspired all who were fortunate to know her.
As a mother and grandmother, Marie cherished her family above all else. She is survived by her children, Darnella (Mike) Conway of Pendleton and Ken (Kris) Whetsel, Jr. of Muncie; her sister, Laura Stephen; and sister-in-law, Mildred Rash. Her legacy of love also continues through her grandchildren, Leann (Mark) Glazier, Lance Conway, Kendra Whetsel, Clinton (Mindy) Whetsel, and Amelia Whetsel, along with great-grandchildren Bryce Glazier, Raya Conway, Wagner Conway, Briella Conway, Ellie Whetsel, and Eryn Whetsel, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Florence Rash, her husband Kenneth L. Whetsel, Sr., her daughter Denise A. Whetsel, brothers John Rash and Phillip Rash, sisters Leah Teeple and Helen Boise, and granddaughter-in-law Jamie Conway.
A service celebrating Marie’s life will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Sugar Grove Church, 600 S 1150 W, Dunkirk. Revs. Randy Davis and Scott McClain will officiate, with interment to follow at the Dunkirk IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on the same day from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made to the Sugar Grove Church, 600 S 1150 W, Dunkirk, Indiana 47336, or through the funeral home.
Whetsel Funeral Service is honored to care for Marie and to support her family during this time.
