Marilyn Brady Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc. on Feb. 15, 2026.
Marilyn Yakus Brady, 87, of Staten Island, New York, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026.

Born on August 29, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, Marilyn was the daughter of Alexander and Helen Yakus, nee Nezer. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1956 and went on to pursue nursing at Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing and St. Joseph's College, earning her Registered Nurse license - a calling she felt since childhood. As a young girl, her first ''patients'' were her perfectly healthy dogs, whom she lovingly wrapped in bandages and cared for with great seriousness.

Marilyn worked for the majority of her nursing career at Bayonne Hospital, where she cared for countless patients with skill, compassion, and dedication.

She met the love of her life, Peter Brady, and together they raised three children - Janice (Tom), Kevin (Lupe), and Caroline. She balanced her career as a nurse with being a devoted and ever-present mother, rarely missing a sporting event and always cheering proudly from the sidelines.

Affectionately known as the ''neighborhood nurse,'' Marilyn was the trusted source for friends and neighbors seeking advice on everything from scraped knees to stubborn rashes. Her calm manner and practical wisdom brought comfort to many.

She especially loved the holidays - Christmas at home was her favorite - where she kept her Eastern European heritage alive through traditional, customary foods prepared for family gatherings. She also found joy in gardening, caring for animals (especially her beloved dog, Bruiser), and traveling to her husband's alma mater, the College of William & Mary, for homecoming football games - a tradition she treasured.

She is survived by her children Janice (Tom), Kevin (Lupe), and Caroline; and her grandchildren Cassandra, Alex, Juliana, Alex, and Ashley.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd. (at Eltingville Station), Staten Island, New York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026 at St. Clare Church located at 110 Nelson Ave Staten Island, New York 10308. Cremation will be private.

It was my pleasure to be Marilyn´s hair dresser. I so enjoyed our visits together and I never had to do much to make her beautiful because she already was inside and out. She will always be loved and never forgotten.Rest in Peace my Friend
