Marilyn Hanson (nee Loop) Obituary

Visit the Hodapp Funeral Home College Hill website to view the full obituary.

Marilyn R. Hanson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in her Springfield Township home, just four weeks after the death of her cherished husband of 67 years, Melvin L. Hanson. She was 90.

Born at home in Cincinnati, Ohio, Marilyn was the youngest of three children to Edgar and Elsie Loop. Her early years were shaped by the warmth of a multi-generational household in College Hill, followed by five years in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon returning to Cincinnati, she graduated from Mount Healthy High School and began her working life at a telephone company and a clothing manufacturer before marrying Melvin and devoting herself to raising their five children.

Marilyn was the loving mother of Matt (Jet) Hanson, Randy (Debbie) Hanson, Holly (Chris) Treinen, and Wren Hanson, and was preceded in death by her son Robin. She was the proud grandmother of Tommy (Cyndi), Alex, and Samantha Hanson, Julie (Drew) Ratterman, and Eric Treinen, and great-grandmother to Nicholas, Hailey, Dean, and Nyara. She is also survived by her sister Lois Bruck and was preceded in death by her brother Edgar.

Her life was rooted in the home Melvin built, where she raised her children. She later worked as a secretary in the Winton Woods school district for 18 years. Marilyn was a lifelong learner—taking piano lessons, mastering computer skills, and even studying Spanish in her retirement. She volunteered at the Mt. Healthy Christian Home and later in an ESL classroom, always seeking ways to stay engaged and give back.

Marilyn’s adventurous spirit led her across the United States and abroad, traveling with family and friends. A highlight of her travels was seeing the Queen of England during a trip to Britain. Her faith was a guiding force, and she worshipped at North Presbyterian Church, Epworth United Methodist Church, and St. John’s Church in Newport, KY during her life.

Devoted to her family, Marilyn poured love into every meal, every homemade pie, every handmade garment, and every moment spent cheering on her grandchildren at concerts, games, and ceremonies. Her strength, generosity, and unwavering support were the foundation of her life.

Though Alzheimer’s dimmed her final years, Marilyn’s legacy of love, resilience, and quiet strength endures in the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6041 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45224. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choosing.
