Pagenkopf Funeral HomeIt is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Leone Mueller, on October 6, 2025, just shy of her 104th birthday. Marion was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 4, 1921, the daughter of Melvin and Lillie (nee Hoffman) Hutchinson.
Marion fulfilled an early ambition, becoming a registered nurse and graduating from The Deaconess School of Nursing. She met Rollie, the love of her life, and were united in marriage in 1943. She then continued working at Columbia hospital for years.
Marion’s service to tennis began in the1940s when she and Rollie owned and operated the Washington Tennis Club in Milwaukee, where they gave the opportunity for all ages to learn the game of tennis. She then went on to serve as the treasurer of Wisconsin Tennis Association for over 26 years. In addition as a board member, she chaired the Junior Development Committee for years, was the WTA Historian, coached the Jr. Wightman Cup Team in the 1950s and served on the ranking, membership and awards committees.
She and her husband, Rollie, ran the National Clay Court Tournament in the 1960s and served as the head umpire for Regional and The National Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Championships in the 1990s and umpired for the Wisconsin State High School Tennis tournament for years. Marion was the chair of the tournament desk for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (nationwide college tournament) for 18 years. Marion's final service to tennis was working along side the wonderful staff of the Moorland Tennis Club, retiring at the age of 90.
Alongside her husband Rollie, she was recognized with the WTA Award in 1965 and the Bill Letwin Award in 1971 for their exceptional commitment to excellence in tennis programming and volunteering. Their dedication to the sport culminated in receiving the USTA Midwest Family of the Year Award in 1978.
As a player, Marion has been top ranked in many age divisions in Wisconsin. Achieved Midwest and national rankings (#6) in the Mother/Daughter division and earned 4 national doubles titles.
Beyond her tennis accomplishments, Marion made her mark in table tennis, serving on the U.S. National Team and received a national ranking of #8 in 1957.
Marion and Rollie’s other strong passion was promoting speed skating in Wisconsin, which led them to be selected to manage the State Fair Park Olympic Rink for two years.
Marion found immense joy in giving her daughters throughout their childhood the opportunity to pursue their tennis and speed skating on a national level. She also encouraged and supported her grandsons in continuing the tennis family tradition. Her long life gave her the opportunity to enjoy and love her great-grandsons as well.
Marion leaves behind her two daughters Barbara Mueller and Jacqueline Egelhoff; her grandchildren Brian (Missy) and Michael (Jennifer) Egelhoff; great-grandchildren Luke, Daniel, Cole, Evan, William and Thomas Egelhoff; sister-in-law Judy Mueller; along with nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Roland; and sister LaVerne Schellpeper.
A special thank you is extended to the nurses at Shorehaven, particularly Kimberly and Alec, and to the dedicated CNAs, Nikki, Carter, and Cheyenne, whose kindness and exceptional care brought comfort to Marion. We are also grateful to the staff at Aurora At Home Hospice for their support during this time.
