Marjorie A. "Marge" Root

Marjorie "Marge" Ann Root, 79, of Norwich, New York, passed away surrounded by loved ones on April 10, 2025. She left a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.

Born May 26, 1945, Marge was the eldest of nine children, daughter to John E. Ellsworth and Cora Louise (DeRose) Ellsworth. She grew up on a farm, developing a strong work ethic and a love for animals, especially horses. She graduated from Leonardsville High School and pursued higher education at SUNY Morrisville, earning an Associate’s degree in Business Technology. She later continued her studies in Business Administration at SUNY Oneonta.

A longtime resident of Norwich, New York, Marge married William "Bill" D. Root of Norwich in 1963. During their time together, they built a life filled with love, family, and shared passions.

Throughout her life, Marge was known for her industrious spirit. She began her career at NBT Bank and worked for 12 years at Norwich Pharmaceuticals. Her leadership skills led her to management positions at the Daily Star and The Evening Sun, where she worked until retiring at 63. Never one to sit idle, Marge spent 16 years working with Ray Cooley Realty and Gary Stewart Realty as an Associate Broker in real estate. She also owned and operated Lisa’s Leathers, selling belts, bags, jackets, tack, and more.

Marge was very involved in her community as a woman of many talents and passions. In her younger years, she was a 4-H leader, and for many years, she participated in numerous Relay for Life teams and volunteered for countless fundraisers. She was a member of the Norwich American Legion Post 189, where she served in various roles, including Chaplain, first Vice President, and second Vice President. In addition, she joined the Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, and Women’s Auxiliary. She also dedicated years to working at election polls, ensuring the democratic process ran smoothly.

Her love for horses never waned. She enjoyed going to Vernon Downs racetrack to watch her dad with his pacers and trotters. In the late 1970s, she showed horses across New York and Ohio and was a longtime member of the Chenango County Horseman’s Association. In 1977, she purchased a farmette to nurture her love of horses. Having long ridden horses and motorcycles as her trusted steeds, she deepened her bond with the open road in the early 2000s by joining the American Legion Riders—trading reins for handlebars and forming lasting friendships within the riding community.

Marge's interests were vast, from gardening, crafting, sewing, cooking holiday dinners, and baking birthday cakes for her family. On most Sundays, Marge could be found rooting for her favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills, and other teams like Syracuse basketball. Marge valued her church family, finding joy and strength in their close-knit community. Known for her quick wit and strong opinions, Marge loved a good political debate and never shied away from defending her beliefs. She was also the first to offer support and assistance whenever her family and friends needed her.

Most of all, she was always eager to share her grandchildren’s accomplishments. She could be seen in the stands cheering for her grandsons at their athletic events and smiling brightly in the audience for her granddaughter’s academic achievements.

Her travels took her far and wide over the years, but the Thousand Islands in Alexandria Bay, New York, always held a special place in her heart. There, she and her loved ones created countless cherished memories—traditions her family continues to honor today.

Marge was predeceased by her parents, John E. Ellsworth and Cora Louise (DeRose) Ellsworth, and her brothers, Owen (Fanny) Ellsworth and David Ellsworth. She is survived by her loving children, Mark Root and Lisa (Root) Rifanburg; her cherished grandchildren, Stephanie (Nick) Curnalia, Levi Rifanburg, Blaine Rifanburg, all of Norwich; and Abbey Stratton of Sherburne; and her siblings, John (Laura) Ellsworth, Charlie (Dort) Ellsworth, Mike (Katie) Ellsworth all of Brookfield, Betty Wood, Sharon Case, and Linda Ashcraft all of Norwich. She also leaves behind an abundance of adored nieces and nephews.

Marge never put off what she could do today until tomorrow. She lived her life with purpose, passion, and a deep love for those around her. Her impact will live on through her family, friends, and community.

Family and friends are invited to gather and honor Marge at the Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich, NY, on April 18, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a memorial service to immediately follow with Pastor Grant Smith, officiating.

Flowers may be sent to Wilson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Marge has requested that donations be made to the American Legion Post 189, 29 Sheldon Street, Norwich, NY 13815.

Her family has entrusted Wilson Funeral Home with her care and funeral arrangements.
