Marjorie Cooper Merritt passed away peacefully on the 19th of November, 2025, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - Union County. She was born on November 28, 1928, in Pontotoc County, MS, and spent her 97 years enriching the lives of those around her with her loving, handy, and generous spirit.
Marjorie dedicated her life to nurturing her family and community. As a homemaker, she became the heart of her household, a role she carried out with grace and joy. Her work history included time as a factory worker for Mohasco and as a cafeteria worker for New Albany Schools, where her warmth and dedication left a lasting impact.
Marjorie's life was a testament to faith and service. An active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, she lived her Christian beliefs through her actions, spreading love and kindness wherever she went. She had a passion for gardening, sewing, and, most importantly, for taking care of her family. Marjorie had the unique and precious opportunity to help raise three generations, leaving a legacy of love and strength behind.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Shelba Whiteside; her adoring granddaughters, Emily Childers (Guy) and Christy Bullock (Jalon); and her cherished great-grandchildren: Anslie Mills (Tripp), Becca Childers (South Sanders), Lilly Cate Childers, and Max Bullock. Her joy was recently multiplied with the arrival of her great-great-grandchild, Henry Mills, who will grow up hearing stories of his beloved matriarch.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her dear parents, Roy and Ora Britt Cooper; her loving husband, Shelby Merritt; her caring son-in-law, Phil Whiteside; as well as her two brothers and one sister. She leaves behind a tapestry of memories that will comfort her family and friends for years to come.
Funeral services will be at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Charlie Davis officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Vista Memorial Park. United Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with these arrangements.
