Dr. Blum made a big difference to my life by mentoring me and being eager and willing to engage in discussions about our common interests of German and Austrian history while I was in graduate school at U of L. His passion for intellectual history and for helping young scholars/students was evident to anyone who took even just one course with him. Even though I hadn´t talked with Mark in quite a while, I will always cherish the way he encouraged my intellectual development. U of L is now missing an amazing professor, but the world and the world of ideas are better for Mark having been in them. Minds like his are a rarity and he will be sorely missed by those who had the good fortune to know him.
