Mark Hakes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Overton Funeral Home - Indianola on Oct. 28, 2022.
Mark Hakes, 75, of Indianola, formerly of Nevada, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at The Village in Indianola. No services are planned at this time.
Mark was born in Nevada, Iowa and lived there most of his life, until the recent move to Indianola. He attended Ames High School, Wartburg College, and Iowa State University. Growing up on a farm peeked his interest in agriculture where Mark worked for his father at the Shipley grain elevator, at Crow's Hybrid for 20 years, then moved on to Jacobson Transportation (Barilla) where he retired in 2014.
His live long love of cowboys culminated in many trips out west to the Yellowstone National Park and the Rocky Mountains. Hours were spent watching John Wayne and western movies. Mark's most childhood prized possession was a marionette of Howdy Doody.
When not working, Mark enjoyed boating on Clear Lake or Rathbun Lake. He will never forget spending time with family and friends, especially that summer the boat sank.
Weekends were spent watching sports, especially those of his favorite team, Iowa State University. But most of all his loved watching his son play high school football while his daughter cheered on. Go Cubs!
Later in life, Mark enjoyed the outdoors in front of his home watching the various types of birds and squirrels enjoy his multiple feeders.
Mark is survived by his wife Marlene; children, Valerie (Paul) Craven and Tony Hakes; grandchildren, Tatyana Craven, Alyssa Craven, Tyler Hakes, Kaitlyn Hakes, Anastasia Craven, Kassidy Hakes and Cooper Hakes; brother, David (Carolyn) Hakes; niece Morgan (Kreg) Parkhurst Leu. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary (Ugolini) Hakes; sister, Christine Manning; and his aunt, Wanda Scott.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Story County Animal Shelter.
