Mark was born September 19, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Albert and Mildred Macke. After high school, Mark attended Butler University graduating in 1970. He then attended The Ohio State University College of Dentistry graduating in 1973. This was followed by an internship with the Public Health Service in San Francisco, CA. His residency in Oral Surgery was at the University of Iowa from 1974 to 1977. After two years of private practice in Indianapolis, IN, Dave Winter convinced Mark to come to Marshalltown where he practiced Oral Surgery from 1979 to 2003. He was known for his caring manner, calling patients the evening of their surgery to check on them. After retirement, Mark taught Anatomy and Physiology at DMACC from 2004 to 2016. During this time, his good friend Linda Bloom called and asked him to help coach the MHS Girls Golf team from 2004 to 2011. Following his retirement from DMACC, Mark enjoyed working at ESPN where he achieved his dream of being paid to watch baseball.
Mark was an active member of the community as an overnight monitor at the House of Compassion, volunteering at the Emergency Food Box, his church, the Marshall County Dental Society and the Y Board. He enjoyed coaching many Little League, Marshalltown Flag Football and Y Basketball teams. He was an avid Buckeye, Butler Bulldog, Hawkeye, Cincinnati Reds and Bengals fan.
Mark will be missed by his wife of 55 years Betsy, their five sons: Scott (Dana), Michael (Jade), Patrick (Sara), Steven and Patrick (Oben Ojong) Fandja and six grandchildren: Samantha, Amelia, James, Danielle, Madeleine Fandja and Zoe Fandja.

To my wonderful brother-in-law of over 55 years. I was 16 when in your wedding. You were so quiet in the beginning, but warmed up to our family & became great friends with your father-in-law, my dad. Wonderful husband, loving father, a great friend to all. You are home with God now. Looking forward to seeing you there. I love you. You will be missed. Thank you for loving Betsy all these years.
