Obituary published on Legacy.com by Funeral Alternatives Group - Lewiston on Dec. 5, 2025.
Obituary for Mark A. Maclean

Mark A. Maclean died peacefully on December 4, 2025. Mark was born in Brunswick, Maine in 1947, to Ralph and Natalie Maclean. His father was a Canadian citizen, and had been in Maine since the Depression. His Mother's people came from Aroostic County. The family spent much of the year in Brunswick and summered on Orrs Island in Harpswell. Mark graduated from Brunswick High School in 1966 and then went on to Graduate from the University Of Maine in Portland with a BS in Education. He began teaching in Brunswick, and later, earned a Masters Degree, cum laude, in Counseling from the University of Southern Maine, a career he would enjoy for the next 34 years. Mark is predeceased by his brothers David and Scott, and a sister, Connie Baribeau.

While working at his first teaching job at Brunswick Jr High School, Mark was a member of the Maine Army National Guard, 133rd Battalion, in Portland for 6 years.

Mr. Maclean worked in a number of schools including Christa McAuliffe Middle School and the Palm Beach School of The Arts in Florida. He moved to Ft. Myers to help open a new high school, Estero High School, in 1987, and served as the Director of Guidance there. In 2001 his mother became ill and Mark returned to Maine to assist in her care. He became the Guidance Director of Portland High School that same year, a job he would enjoy until he retired in 2011. Mr. Maclean received many awards in his career, including Teacher Of The Year, Employee Of The Month, District Specialist Award, County Counselor of The Year, and others. He served on a number of Boards and was past President of The Palm Beach County Counselors Association, The Lee County Counselors Association, and member of the Florida Counselor Association. In Portland he was a Building Representative for The Portland Teachers Association.

Upon retiring, Mark worked part time in the Emergency Room at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. Mark was active in State Street Church in Portland and served as a Deacon there for many years. After a particularly bad winter, Mark and his dog Teddy decided to move back to Florida where he worked part time for the Supervisor of Elections for Collier County, and enjoyed time with family members who lived in Naples.

Mark was a member of The Humane Society and ASPCA. He contributed to these organizations, became a Member of The Naples United Church Of Christ and joined The Green Justice Team where he worked with others to improve the environment, encouraging people to go green, and politicians to make laws friendly to the environment and wildlife.

Mark enjoyed his retirement, returning to Maine each summer. He became a lover of books and was a regular visitor at the library. He moved back to his home state of Maine in 2022 as a full-time resident. In Portland he rejoined his old church and loved spending time with old friends. Mark adopted a rescue dog, Buddy, and they enjoyed the change of seasons together. Mark leaves behind his treasured friends, family, and hopefully leaves the world a little better place.

I am so sad at the loss of a dear friend, Mark and my condolences go out to his family, many friends and the many students whose lives he touched with his loving guidance through the years. But how wonderful it is to learn of his many personal and professional accomplishments which come as no surprise to those of us who knew his love and who loved him. Rest in peace dear Mark.
