It is with sad news to note the passing of Mark von Schleider of Newfield, N.Y. at age 71, on January 24, 2025. Mark was born to Howard and June von Schleider in 1953 in Englewood, N.J. where he lived with his parents, sister Robin and brother Arthur. The family relocated to Ithaca in 1967 where Mark graduated from Ithaca High School in 1971. After a brief enrollment at SUNY-Brockport, Mark began work as a surveyor in the Ithaca area with his father until his retirement and then later moved to Newfield.
Mark was an avid reader and a student of history. He could recite facts, figures and dates of even the most obscure military events especially of the WWII era. He had an especially encyclopedic knowledge of aircraft of the era. Mark was a devoted fan of the New York Knicks and always rooted for the NY Football Giants team. He could also remember very specific statistics of most players from the NBA from 1960's-1990's. Mark himself was an avid basketball player in his younger years and used to play in the pick-up games in Cornell's Teagle Hall and later in Barton Hall that were a staple of athletic activities there in the 80s and 90s. Mark loved classic black and white movies. He also enjoyed The Hunger Games films immensely. Mark especially enjoyed playing board games with his wide circle of friends on Friday and Saturday evenings, especially the game 'Rail Baron'. It was not the competition that stimulated Mark, but rather the camaraderie of being with his friends that he most enjoyed. He was well liked by all. Mark was that rare individual who never had a negative thing to say about anyone he knew. He was a good friend. He was a good man. A truly remarkable soul. He always dreamed about traveling in an RV across the country and hope that's where he is now. He will be missed.
Mark leaves behind his sister Robin Misciagna of Colorado Springs, CO and great niece Piper. He was predeceased by his brother Arthur and mother and father.
