Mark Strother Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory - Greenwood Chapel on Aug. 15, 2024.
"Mark Strother, 71, passed away August 13th, 2024, in Greenwood, IN.
Mark was a world builder, an orator of integrity, and an optimistic believer in humanity's goodwill. He was a Hoosier in his heart, with a deep pride of his family, his home, and what it means to be a true individual in deep connection with our shared histories.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech, and a Masters in Theater, Radio, and Television from Ball State University, a university with proud family ties. He was a lifelong student, a professor, a writer, a photographer, a musician, a traveler, a man of distinguished taste, a true artist, and above all he was a father who gave his kids the world. He was patient, and forgiving, and his love is an everlasting gift.
He taught Speech and Theater Appreciation at Ivy Tech Community College for the last 20 years, where he encouraged critical thinking and self-expression. He believed it was important for students to see live theater and received grants that funded field trips for students to attend live performances and plays in the local Indianapolis community.
His father Edward Strother was his hero, and he regarded his mother Jeanne Strother as the radical saint of strength & beauty that she was. He loved and deeply respected both his brother Michael Strother, and his sister Jennifer Strother.
Surviving are his son, David Strother; daughter, Biz (Elizabeth) Strother; brother, Michael Strother (wife, Hisako Sakimoto Strother); and niece Yukiko Jeanne Strother.
A memorial in celebration of Mark Strother's life will be held on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, between 5-7pm, at the Cabaret Room in the Indianapolis Repertory Theater, 140 W. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN. "
Final Care entrusted to Wilson St. Pierre Family Funeral & Cremation Services 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN 46142.

I met and started dating Mark on High School. He was my prom date.
Although we stopped dating after several months we stayed friends onto our college years.

One memory of Mark was when he was cast as Nick Bottoms in A Midsummers Nights Dream directed by his father. We would go out after rehearsals since it was summer. I attended the dress rehearsal. I moved west after college and we lost touch. We reconnected through Facebook and we got together a few times when I was I n Indiana. We talked on the phone a number of times

In the spring of 1974 there was a swath of tornadoes barreling through Indiana near Muncie. Mark and I were walking from campus to a restaurant near where I lived. Not once did we think maybe we should seek shelter! When you were with Mark you felt just that protected.

I've known Mark for over 50 years. Shared many long, deep philosophcal conversations with him over a joint and a bootle of Boones Farm when we were kids! We started our families about the same time as young adults, then lost touch during our middle years. I'm not exactly sure when, or even how, we reconnected during recent years. But it was a joy and an honor to spend time with him. His insight, his integrity, his wit and his intellect were beyond compare! He was also dear and sweet. Happy Trails my friend!
