Mark Westover, age 74, of Garretson, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held from 1-4:00 PM, with military honors at 4:00 PM, on Saturday, July 31, 2021, all at the American Legion in Garretson.
Mark A. Westover was born on April 15, 1947, in Pipestone, Minnesota to Robert and Arline (Thompson) Westover. He grew up in Egan, South Dakota and graduated from Egan High School and was a star athlete. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic. After his honorable discharge Mark started a career with Sioux Valley Electric as a lineman. His job brought him to Garretson where he met Roxann Schleuter. They were married on August 15, 1981, in Garretson.
Mark was a 35-year member of the American Legion in Garretson. In Marks younger years, he continued to play softball and fish with his family and friends up until his accident in 1988. Mark kept active, and he took great pride in the upkeep of his acreage. "GRUMPA", as the kids referred to him as, had to daily remind them to, "Stay off his lawn!!" Most days you could find Mark socializing and watching Westerns with his buddies at the local popshop. But above all, Mark loved spending time with his grandkids and attending their endless sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Roxann, Garretson; children Dallas (Kristen) Westover, Garretson, and Nikki (Darrek) Chester, Garretson; grandchildren: Jayse, Lincoln, Hadley, and Parker Westover, and Treyton, Drew, and Kacen Chester; siblings, Tom (Barb) Westover, Egan, Barbara (Jim) Schenck, Vergas, MN, Mary (Gordon) Lee, Elkton, Warren (Lisa) Westover, Sioux Falls, Terry (Tammy) Westover, Dell Rapids, Dale (Susan) Westover, Sioux Falls, Todd (Jackie) Westover, Sioux Falls, Rich (Kelley) Westover, Colman, Peggy (Shaun) Bell, Harrisonville, MO; a sister-in-law, Marlene (Merle) Westover, Isle, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Merle and Kenny; nephew Derrick; and father-in-law, Loren Schleuter.
