Our beautiful mother, Marlene Barrett, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, February 9, 2026, at 89 years of age in the comfort of her home in Springville, Utah. She was an angel on earth and an unconditional source of love and support to her family, friends, and neighbors alike.
Marlene was born in Bankstown, New South Wales, Australia, on October 25, 1936, to Herbert Gordon Greer and Doris Ruth Illingworth and grew up learning the values of hard work, faith, commitment, honesty, compassion, and especially loving thy neighbor.
As a young lady, Marlene discovered the gospel of Jesus Christ through LDS missionaries and was converted and baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly after her conversion, Marlene served a mission in the New South Wales, Australia Mission, where she met her future husband and lifelong sweetheart, Levi Orson Barrett. They were married in the chapel of All Saints Church, The Entrance, NSW, Australia, on her birthday in 1963.
Levi and Marlene embarked on a lifelong journey together, starting a young family of four children: Toni Marie, David Orson, Rodessa Ann, and John Wesley. They eventually moved to the Central Coast of California, settling down in the small town of Atascadero, where they raised their young family. Marlene was a nurturing mother and a loving source of stability, peace, and comfort in her home. She served as a constant and enduring example of Christlike love to her family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who crossed her path.
Marlene’s testimony of her Savior was undeniable, and her faith, like granite, played an instrumental role in her life pursuits. She served in many capacities in the Church and enjoyed each of her callings, but especially missionary work. Marlene loved to share the gospel and was a stalwart missionary until she passed. She gave generously of her time and resources to help and support those in need, which endeared her to many of God’s children throughout her life.
Marlene loved to spend time with her husband in the temple and sought to attend whenever possible. When her children were young, Levi and Marlene brought them to the Los Angeles Temple, where they were sealed together as a family for time and all eternity. This was a pivotal time of faith for Marlene’s family and served to set a foundation for the future.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Levi Orson Barrett; Brian and Toni Roberts; David and Corrie Barrett; Rodessa and Eric Newton; her youngest son, John Wesley Barrett; twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Marlene is currently performing missionary work on the other side of the veil and undoubtedly spending many moments with her grandchildren who have not yet come to earth to receive their mortal bodies.
A memorial and celebration of Marlene’s extraordinary life will be held in Springville, Utah, on Saturday, February 28, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial services will be held at the LDS chapel located at 950 South 1700 East in Springville. Marlene’s burial service will take place at the Bluffdale Veterans Cemetery in Bluffdale, UT, at 1:30 p.m. on the same day.
