Marolyn Bostrom

Marolyn Louise Bostrom, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Stoney Brook Care Facility in West Union, Iowa. Marolyn lived 89 wonderful years and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She may best be remembered for her love of community, music, strong faith, many hours spent cooking and feeding others, and her dedication to her husband and family. She was born Marolyn Louise Sersland to parents Hillman and Irene Sersland on May 31, 1935.
Marolyn graduated from Decorah High School in 1953 and went on to pursue her RN degree at the Swedish Hospital of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN after attending Luther College for one year. Following this, Marolyn served as a county school nurse in West Union, Iowa for one year. She was introduced to her husband, Gary, on a blind date set up by Gary's sister, Patty. They fell in love and were married six months later at Washington Prairie Church in Decorah on September 24, 1958. Shortly after their marriage, Marolyn followed Gary to Korea where she served as an army nurse for two years. The two went on to have four children, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Over the years, Marolyn was a proud and active member of PEO since 1962. She claimed that one of the best things she did in her life was to participate in singing in The Messiah for over 60 years. She was also very honored for her and Gary to be named West Union's Citizens of the Year in 2007.
Marolyn is survived by her children, David (Pam) Bostrom of Owatonna, Minnesota, Mark (Robin) Bostrom, Fayette, Iowa, Laurie (Jim) Kirkpatrick, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Lea Rea (Jeremy) Vanhorn, West Union, Iowa; ten grandchildren; Valerie (Nathan) DeBruin, Melissa, Texas, Lauren (Reese) Bostrom Davis, Great Falls, Montana, Jack (Erin) Bostrom, Ostego,Minnesota, Lucas (Katie) Bostrom, Grimes, Iowa, Alexandra (Clay) Spear, Beaman, Iowa, Haley Kirkpatrick, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jenna Kirkpatrick, Chicago, Illinois, Joshua DeLuca, Waukon, Iowa, Drew DeLuca, West Union, Iowa, Levi Vanhorn, West Union, Iowa, and great-grandchildren, Kyler, Shea and Hayes Bostrom, Harper and Isla Davis, Leo Spear and Scarlett DeBruin, and sister-in-law, Sonja Sersland.
Marolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, her parents, Hillman and Irene Sersland, and her siblings, Howard Sersland and Wally Sersland.
The Family is most grateful for the loving care she received both from the staff at Stoney Brook and her personal caregivers, Merry and Colleen.
Memorials may be sent to Gundersen Palmer Hospice or Stoney Brook Care Facility, both of West Union, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, October 14, 2024 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union, Iowa with Pastor Lori Kleppe as the officiant.
A Visitation will be held from 10:30 am until time of service at the church on Monday.
Lunch will immediately follow the service.
A private family burial will take place at the West Union City Cemetery in West Union, Iowa
