Martha Axton Obituary

Martha Lee Axton, 67, of Carthage, Ill., passed away early on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
Martha was born on March 25, 1958, in Mexico, Mo. She was the daughter of Marion "Mac" Whitaker and Martha Riley.
Martha was tough and a hard worker. She spent many years working in the local restaurants from the days of the Town House, the Double Deuce, the Wright Place, among many others. Martha would always tell you like it is, and she didn't hold back. You didn't mess with her people. She had a huge heart and an even bigger attitude to go with it. Martha enjoyed playing rummy and solitaire any chance she could. She liked to BBQ, drink Pepsi, and hang out with her friends. Most of all, she loved being a grandma the most. She cared deeply for her grandchildren and would do anything for them. She was always their biggest cheerleader, on and off the field.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Bobbi (Cullen Grainger) Whitaker of Bentley, and Gloria (Alan) Scheetz of Hamilton; her grandchildren, Ser (Cassie) Whitaker of St. Paul, Minn., Octavius Whitaker, Harmony Scheetz, and Victoria Ayala; her great-grandchildren, Tavion Whitaker and Wynne Whitaker; her brother, Joseph Whitaker, as well as many other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Jane Soils.
