Martha Gatchell Manley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Canale Funeral Directors - Memphis on Jan. 7, 2026.
Martha Sue "Suzy" Gatchell Manley died peacefully on January 4, 2025, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.
A fifth generation Memphian and fourth generation member of Lindenwood Christian Church, she was born in 1955 and graduated in 1973, from East High School as a proud member of the Twelve-Year Club. Her undeniable love for the city's rich history and culture made Suzy, perhaps, its greatest cheerleader and tour guide.
Suzy graduated from University of Memphis and taught in Memphis City Schools, including eight years at Magnolia Elementary. She left a career in education when her son, Logan, was born and always considered him her greatest adventure and favorite person. She continued her commitment to education as a substitute teacher at Christ Methodist Day School. Suzy was an early member of the Carpenter Art Garden and participated in Arise to Read, supporting the second-grade students of Cornerstone Elementary. Her lifelong passion for teaching and love for all children was unwavering.
Suzy was a woman of many talents. As a Master Gardener, a member of the Cultivated Friends Garden Club, and an incredibly accomplished needleworker, her community of friends and the breadth of her knowledge never waned. She even learned to play piano at the young age of 55, reminding us that it's never too late to try something new. She shared joy and optimism at every encounter. Her social circle was ever expanding, and she had countless friends whom she adored. Throughout her journey, she remained grateful and gracious, always appreciating the blessings of life, family, and friends.
Suzy was predeceased by her parents, Martha and John Ellis Gatchell. She is survived by her son Logan Walker Manley, (Katie), granddaughter Mackenzie Grace Troutman, sister Dale Gatchell Webb (Roger), nephew Daniel Allen Webb (Kim), niece Sarah Webb Miley (Ethan), great nephews John Gatchell Miley and William Walker Miley, and her beloved dog, Dee Dee. The family extends deep gratitude to the team at A Home to Heart for their loving, compassionate care of Suzy during her last few months.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 10th at 3:00 p.m., at Lindenwood Christian Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Suzy's memory to The Carpenter Art Garden, The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County, or Lindenwood Christian Church.
