Herman-Veh Funeral Home & CrematoryMartha Jane (Hawk) Unger, 87, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026 in Tomball, Texas. She was lovingly surrounded by family at Southern Knights Memory Care when she went to meet our Lord.
Martha was born in Fremont, Ohio to Howard and Matilda (Gabel) Hawk on August 16, 1938. Martha married Carl George Unger on September 13,1958 in Fremont, Ohio. Before marriage, Martha worked for the County Clerk’s office after graduating from St. Joseph Central Catholic High School. Her most beloved job was raising their 5 daughters as they moved many times, living in 5 states (including different cities in Texas). Each new city brought new friends, a new church and many activities for their family.
Martha dedicated herself to each church through Alter Society, Ladies Guild, Adoration, working at the Food Pantry, teaching Catechism with Carl in their home, and serving at High School retreats. She volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader and on the New Comers Committee; then when the girls were in school she worked in school libraries. In each new community, Martha planned mini driving vacations (adventures!) to expand her girls’ understanding of culture and history. Martha loved to play cards, line dance and play the piano. She was a loving friend who knew all her neighbors and treasured those friendships. Her love of baking and cooking were shared with her friends as well as her daughters’ friends – no one left without something to eat! As “Nana” she was full of life and laughter, creating loving memories with her 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She left a positive mark on everyone she encountered.
Martha is preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 60 years, her 5 siblings and parents.
A Funeral Mass was held on January 31, 2026 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. The Graveside service will be celebrated by Msgr. Walter Oxley at 11:30am on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Gibsonburg, Ohio.
