Martha Louise McDonald Lachicotte, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Born in Gaffney, South Carolina on September 29, 1935, Martha was the daughter of Charles Edgar and Ramona Dietzel McDonald of Winnsboro, SC. Martha graduated from Mount Zion Institute in Winnsboro and Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia with a degree in history. She enjoyed her summer breaks working on Martha’s Vineyard and visiting relatives on Pawleys Island, where she met her husband, “Doc” Lachicotte.
A modest lady, she had more accomplishments than most people would ever realize. From being valedictorian of her high school class, to expanding The Hammock Shops from two stores to the village that it is today, as well traveling across the entire globe, she led a rich and inspiring life in the humblest way imaginable. She had a unique passion for and was a lifelong learner of both local and global history. A 50 year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Martha had a distinctive zeal for understanding and preserving her family’s heritage. She arduously studied and traveled the world to visit and experience important historical places, inspiring many family members to study and understand the world and their personal heritage.
She captured the admiration of her loved ones by her extraordinary dedication to her family. Faithfully married to her husband Doc for over 65 years, she exhibited patience, wisdom, and demonstrated true love daily. Raising three children, and guiding five grandchildren and a great grandchild, she shared her talents and faith with all of her descendants. Her grandchildren enjoyed spending time with her on the boat in Pawleys Creek, learning how to cook countless recipes, and being put to bed by her reading Bible stories.
Martha dedicated her life to serving others, guiding them towards a higher purpose, and caring for those in need. She was active in leadership roles at both All Saints (Waccamaw) Church and The Abbey, serving as Senior Warden for many years. She also served as president of the Fourth Province of the Episcopal Churchwomen, representing 20 dioceses across nine southeastern states. Recognized as a leader in the religious community, she had the privilege of sharing her faith with countless others across the local community and the world. Guided by her faith in God, she was a shining example to her family, friends, and all who crossed paths with her.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Cecile L. Spivey (Steve) and Virginia L. Aimar (Charles); her grandchildren Daniel Spivey (Caroline), Lauren Spivey, Adam Lachicotte, Charles Aimar and Margaret Aimar; and her great-granddaughter Gibson Spivey. She is also survived by her brother, Charles E. McDonald, Jr. (Pat); nephews Charles McDonald (Laurin), Jack McDonald, and Lewis Middleton (Cathie), and nieces Julia Royall (John) and Rebecca Blanton (Mike).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Herbert “Doc” Lachicotte, Jr., and daughter Louise Lachicotte.
Family members extend their heartfelt thanks to Martha’s dedicated caregivers Linda Boulanger and Carolyn Ford.
A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at The Abbey at Pawleys Island, 46 Gathering Lane, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 followed by the burial at All Saints Church on Kings River Road.
