Martha Long passed away Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Baptist Hospital, Jackson, MS. She was born November 21, 1932, in Oxford, Mississippi.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home Byram and Wednesday, December 27 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be held in Lakewood Memorial Park, Clinton Boulevard, Jackson, MS.
Martha grew up in Ruleville, Mississippi where she attended and graduated Ruleville High School. After graduation she married Robert Long and they were blessed with three children, one daughter and two sons. Martha participated in many of her children’s school activities and was a Brownie Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of Leavell Woods United Methodist Church since 1957. Martha enjoyed sewing, including making her daughter’s and one of her daughter’s-in-law wedding dresses. Another enjoyment for her was crocheting lullaby blankets for babies born at the University Medical Center and crocheting over 300 little caps for the babies born at Merit Health Central, Baptist, and Women’s Hospitals all located in the Jackson, MS area. Martha gave of herself freely with no expectation of anything in return. Her thought and frequent saying was, “it is more blessed to given than to receive.”
Martha was employed as a receptionist at Lakewood Memorial Park, Clinton Blvd., from 1972 until 1987. She was promoted to manager of Lakewood South Memorial Park where she remained until her retirement in 1995. After taking a two-year break, Martha returned to work for Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home, Robinson Road. She regarded the years she was employed at Lakewood and Baldwin-Lee very closely to the work she did for her church.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Robert L. Long, and her daughter and best friend, Brenda Long George.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Robert L. “Bo” Long, Jr. and his wife Linda, of Byram, MS, and Dr. Gary A. Long and his wife Kathy, of Madison, MS; her son-in-law, Glen George of Brandon, MS; one sister, Jan Estes of Oxford, MS; one brother, Buddy Jones of Decatur, AL; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
At Martha’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mississippi Animal Rescue League (MARL), 5221 Greenway Dr., Jackson, MS 39204.
