Marthanne "Martha" Colvert of Spartanburg, SC passed away on her 86th birthday on
July 9, 2025. During the weeks preceding her passing, Martha was surrounded by
family at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC. She passed peacefully in her
sleep while accompanied by her daughter, Laura.
Born on July 9, 1939, in Bessemer, Alabama, Martha's love for education blossomed
at an early age. She received her bachelors degree from Birmingham Southern in 1961
and her Masters of Education from Converse College in 1996. She was an educator at
heart, and she continued to serve her community as a substitute teacher many years
after retiring from being a full-time English teacher in Union County. During her time at
Union High School, she served as the faculty advisor for the Student Government
Association for many years. She passed on her passion for education to her children
and grandchildren.
Martha was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, where she
served in the children's church for many years.
Martha is survived by her doting companion, Alfred Wilson, who stood by her side for
the past twenty-two years, and their beloved dog Elspeth ("Ellie"). They shared a love
for travel, TV game shows, and good food – especially sweets. Martha is also survived
by her three children – LeighAnne Clifton (Bill), Laura Humar (Tom), Patrick Lowe
(Susan); her grandchildren, who referred to her as "Momz" – Cameron Martin (Taylor),
Bryce Clifton (Kylee), Hilary Rash (Kirby), Allee Mathis (Hamilton), Ansley DeLaney
(Justin); step-grandchildren Alison Albright (Cody) and Adam Humar; and eleven great-
grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Sue Colvert; best friend, Jennifer
McClung; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, James
and Mary Evelyn Colvert; siblings Patty Sutton (Bob) and Sonny Colvert; and her
grandson, Patrick Lowe Jr.
Martha will be remembered for her sharp wit and unparalleled sass, and her family is
certain that she is scrutinizing the grammar herein as we speak. Martha loved a good
party and could always be counted on to come celebrate an achievement or birthday –
especially if cake was involved. She had an appreciation for the "laughter and levity" of
time spent with family and friends, especially on her birthday. As much as her family will
miss her here on Earth, they have joy in knowing she celebrated her 86th birthday
with both her earthly and Heavenly father.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in the Chapel of Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs officiated by Rev. Dr. Bryan Stepp.
The family will be at their respective homes.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the McCall Hospice House of Greenville 1836 West Georgia Rd., Simpsonville, SC 29680.
