MARTIN BUCHSBAUM Obituary

MARTIN BUCHSBAUM
October 9, 1950 - March 9, 2025
If you are reading this, I have joined my beloved bride and ancestors in the realm of the imperishable. I was a 1950 model native Santa Fean; Marian Hall was then the hospital. Back when I grew up, it was a time when (almost) everyone was friendly, our varied cultures intermingled and blended fluidly; "ethnic" distinctions united us not divided us. Alas, our Utopia was despoiled by newcomers who, instead of basking in the shadow of the Sangres, brought their agendas...
I admit it, I was irredeemably influenced by playing in the dirt; Piñon sap in my hair; plinking beer cans with a 22 rifle; Mommy seat belts while drag racing up Canyon Road; classical music and hootenannies; rancheras and ballet and square dancing; farolitos, enpanaditas and posole. It was here that I met a beautiful girl named Stacy and made her my wife; her gift to me was our independently minded daughter Hylah (Tim Clemans, daughters Rose and Anastasia, Aurora, CO) and a life chock-full of joy and happiness. Along the way I managed to be a life-long Episcopalian at The Church of the Holy Faith; have two fulfilling careers, one with my hands, one with my mind; and devote more than fifty years to helping others in their worst moments as a member of the Tesuque Fire Department. All in all, it has been quite a ride, and I thank all my friends, acquaintances and everyone else for making it worthwhile.
I cannot say "Good bye" without acknowledging my sister, absolute best friend and rock, Donna Bell of Houston. Other kin includes Cousins Suzanne and Peter Taichert and Stacy's brothers Bob and John Southerland who all, conveniently, live in Albuquerque, Cousin Allen Buchsbaum, and a whole flock of cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of the Holy Faith or to any volunteer fire department. Donations for cancer research in the name of Stacy Buchsbaum would also be accepted.

Marty,
Cheers - 100%. What a wonderful gift you leave us with - your beautifully nostalgic goodbye letter! Respectfully, I personally did not know you, however I too am a native son, but long since removed. Interestingly, we share many of the same experiences and sentiments about growing up in old SF. I tip my hat to you sir - for a life well lived and thank you for your legacy of goodness. Yes, it has been quite a ride. Sending heartfelt condolences to your family and friends.

Dear Marty, reading your obituary brought back so many memories from my childhood and growing up in Tesuque (especially the Mommy and Daddy seatbelts!) I remember riding high atop the stock racks of my Dad's 1965 Ford truck. We were so free back then to live a life filled with joy and the freedom to live as (I believe) God intended. Our community was home to a diverse population. We went to school with hispanics, natives, a few black families and white people which were the minority back then. As you said, we all blended together with no regard for race. We were just people.

My Dad (Dave Yardman) was in the Tesuque Volunteer Fire Department with you in the 1970's and 80's. Our family and yours became friends in our shared love of our beloved Tesuque. You were a person that always stood out in the crowd. You offered true friendship in a way that was uncommon.

Everyone in the Tesuque Volunteer Fire Department family from the 70s and 80s will miss you Marty. Give Dad a hug for me! I know you two are catching up and reminiscing about the good ol' days!

What a beautiful message this man sent our community before passing on. I don't know him nor his family but was touched by his way of expressing his love on earth. You all must be a wonderful family. I wish you all peace, my condolences to everyone.

Marty and your family. I have wonderful memories of you and your family. First knowing the Taicherts Five &Dime Store owned and operated by your family. I had the pleasure of working with your Mom as an X Ray Tech. At the old St Vincent Hospital. And had the pleasure of accompanying you for the Fire Inspection for the newly built Buffalo Thunder. You were truly the most knowledgeable fire inspector that Insurance Companies used. Rest In Peace my friend

Rest in Peace Martin. I did not know you or your family. But I love the idea of writing your own obituary. I think I may take a page out of your book and write my own (that way I know only good stuff will be said). My thoughts and prayers are with your family and I pray God comforts them during their time of grief.
