Dear Elisabeth and Jennifer:
I am so truly sorry to hear of the loss of Martin. He was a wonderful human being. The first time I ever met Martin, I was sure he was a child genius. It was around 1971 when I went to a Bible Study in Brighton, MA. I have a big smile on my face whenever I think of Martin and that evening. I was just a teenager then and Martin was much younger than me. I am guessing he was no more than 9 or 10 years old. The person conducting the Bible study concerning Christianity asked a question about ancient history. I do not remember the question at all; but I will forever remember the answer. It blew me away. Martin answered quite eloquently about the rise of the Eastern Orthodox church and the divide when the Catholic Church split with it due to theological and political differences and when Constantinople's Pope and the Roman Pope excommunicated each other. He then extrapolated about the Byzantine empire and the trickle down effect on the churches and Christianity. I am telling you, I will never forget it. I felt so undereducated about all of this. I had to know who this boy was. I was then introduced to Martin and Elisabeth and Martin's younger sister Jennifer, who were all in attendance in this small group. Other than this Einstein-like mind, Martin seemed like a very normal kid when I met him. He was very respectful and kind. Of course, this made me want to attend even more Bible studies so I could learn all of these historical and religious facts from times of old. Well lo and behold, after some time---maybe a few years, I was surprised when I learned that Martin became a very dear and close friend of my younger brother Cosmo. I am not sure how that even happened actually; but I was happy that my brother met and had such a good friend. I guess the rest is history-------my entire family of 6 plus kids all loved Marty. As I got older, as with everyone, age didn't matter much; and I considered Martin to be a good friend. He had a great personality and the funniest sense of humor. I would run into him at my dad's house in Brookline visiting my brother there. I can see his big wide grinned smile as I think of him. He was a pleasure to know. I am so sorry for your loss Elisabeth and Jennifer. I hope your many many years of memories with Martin will bring you much comfort and peace at this time of sadness. He was a treasure! God bless you and your family. Love Christine Nicastro
