Martin J. Stumpf, 59, a resident of Gurnee, IL, passed away May 8, 2025, in Libertyville, IL, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born February 1, 1966, in Chicago, IL, to Martin and Helen Stumpf.
Marty was a police officer with the Highland Park Police Department for 23 years. His measured, thoughtful and patient demeanor served him well on the force. After sustaining an on-the-job injury, Marty retired early from the HPPD.
Marty's next job was as a stay-at-home dad. He volunteered his time as a leader for Marty Jr.'s Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops, from his Bobcat badge to Eagle Scout. Marty was a mainstay at all the meets of the Warren Township High School swim and water polo teams, cheering on his own kids and their teammates. Marty also was a stalwart supporter of his kids' karate efforts, from white belt to black belt, including traveling to local, state and national events. He never missed a karate practice or competition.
He was an avid hiker and traveled across the U.S. countless times with his family, who all enjoyed road trips. He had written in his memoir, "I've never regretted a moment I spent out enjoying nature. Lingering too long at some view on a hike, falling behind on schedule because I couldn't be dragged away, these are some things that could be expected of me." Marty was a dog lover, and, along with his family, he fostered several dozen dogs in need of help. Marty is survived by his wife of 35 years, Christina Stumpf; his children, Marty M. Stumpf and Chloe Stumpf; his parents, Martin and Helen Stumpf; siblings Carol (Johnny) Jarosz, Bill (Jill) Stumpf, Rick (Julie) Stumpf, and his twin brother, Michael Stumpf. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Martin and Rose Stumpf, and maternal grandparents, George and Anna Mayer.
A visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 30, 2025, from 10-11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Annunciation, 22333 W. Erhart Rd., Mundelein, IL 60060, with the Funeral Mass immediately following at 11 a.m. All funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd.
