Marty L. Sugerman, 88, of Estero, Florida, formerly of Waverly, Pennsylvania, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, at home after a long illness. His beloved wife of 61 years, Linda, was by his side.
Marty was born to the late Harry and Estelle (Glickfield) Sugerman on Oct. 31, 1934, in Scranton, Pa. He graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1952, attended the George Washington University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of Scranton in 1956. He served in the United States Army as a personnel specialist in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Upon returning from the Army, he met and married his wife Linda who was his lifelong partner and best friend.
Marty joined the family business, Sugerman's Eynon Drug, later known as Sugerman's, founded by his father Harry. He continued to grow the business into one of the largest department store complexes in Northeastern Pennsylvania and opened several other locations along with his son, Steve. Sugerman's predated Walmart and sold everything from home appliances to sporting goods.
Marty loved the outdoors. He was a lifelong fisherman and built a man-made lake in Greenfield Twp., Pa. He established an employee recreation center, affectionately know as SEDRA, on one side of the lake. Many happy summers were spent at the lake with his family, teaching his children how to fish and instilling in them his love of the outdoors.
He loved to tend to his garden and a favorite hobby was cooking, among his specialities, homemade pizza and pasta. Marty was an avid golfer and tennis player and an active member of Glen Oak Country Club in Waverly, Pa. He continued to play golf in his retirement at Spring Run Golf Club in Estero, Fla., where he started a men's bocce team, enjoyed a good game of poker and was a member of the community's fishing club.
Marty served on several boards and was the proud recipient of an award from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest recognition a local scouting council can bestow upon volunteer leaders.
Marty is survived by his wife, Linda (Lonstein) Sugerman; his daughters, Susie (partner, Chuck Saunders) Sugerman and Kari (Joseph) Wolff; and grandchildren, Dylan Walsh, Emerson Wolff and Trevor Wolff.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Steve Sugerman.
Throughout Marty's life, he possessed an unmatched inner strength which continued throughout his illness and the last years of his life.

Marty was a great guy. I had a problem with a purchase from the store and he fixed it and then some. He was a very honest and ethical man. Rest in peace, Marty!

Dear Linda, Susie and Kari,
We are so sad when reading about Marty. He was a kind, generous and wonderful man and a great asset to his community. A soft spoken giant who will be sorely missed. We are thinking about you and will keep you in our prayers.
