Marvin Bergsten Obituary
August 18, 1938 - March 19, 2025
Marvin (Marve) L. Bergsten, age 86, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, with family by his side. He was born on August 18, 1938, to the late Reuben and Gladys (Hilding) Bergsten in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Coburg High School in 1956. Marve then continued his education at Peru State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree on July 28, 1960. Finally, he completed his Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska in Omaha.
He married the love of his life, Patricia (Pat), on December 22, 1962. Marve and Pat were blessed with their children Mark, Dyan, and Ben. Marve's first teaching job was at Bloomer Junior High, and he then went on to teach at Abraham Lincoln High School. In 1974, Marve and Pat opened Midwest Sporting Goods, where they worked together for 40 years.
Marve had a lifelong passion for tennis, which he enjoyed as a player, coach, parent, and fan. He also found great joy in his faith and being a member of First Baptist Church in Council Bluffs. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and his love for his grandchildren was immeasurable. He cherished every moment with his family, especially watching them play sports.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Bergsten; son, Mark Bergsten; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Bergsten; brothers, Ronald and Larry Bergsten; sister-in-law, Audrey Bergsten.
Marve is survived by his children, Dyan Larsen (Kent), Ben Bergsten (Piera); grandchildren, Abby Barents (Jacob), Lauren McGuire (Jared), Lexy Larsen, Ally Bergsten, Megan McLain, Olivia Larsen, Matthew McLain, Avary Bergsten, and Lexie McLain; great-grandchild, Saben Barents; a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home, on Sunday, March 30, 2025. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Monday, March 31, 2025. Interment is in Cedar lawn Cemetery. The family will direct memorials in Marve's honor.

I was a long time friend of the Bergstens dating back to the late 50s and the farm near Coburg. Classmate, teammate and friend. I was saddened to learn of Marv's passing. He will always be a special memory in my life. "May God Bless."

I remember Marv from my years at Bloomer School. Also I purchased my sons letter jacket from Midwest Sports. Sometimes I just stopped in his store just to talk! Always enjoyed visiting with Marv. I also enjoyed cutting his hair. He was a special human being. Rest in peace Marv

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Marve. I purchased a lot of merchandise from Marve while coaching at Shelby-Tennant and Treynor. He was always great at working with me to get what I needed at a reasonable price. Just a very pleasant person to talk with. The same held true for Ben and all the other people that worked at Midwest Sporting Goods.
