Marvin Cunningham Obituary

Marvin Richard Cunningham, lovingly known as Richard, passed away peacefully at his home on January 2, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on July 1, 1937, in Marietta, Georgia, Richard lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and love for his family and country.

Richard was a proud native of Marietta, where he graduated from Osborne High School before continuing his education with college courses at Southern Tech. He had a great love for history, which fueled his voracious reading habit and instilled a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. His profound respect for history also took him on many journeys across the United States with his beloved wife, Virginia "Jennie" Hemmer Cunningham, visiting national parks and various historical sites in their trusty motor home. Together, they created a lifetime of cherished memories during their 67 years of marriage, which began on August 7, 1958.

In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Richard poured his heart and soul into his career, owning and operating Black & White Auto Service and serving as a master mechanic for an impressive 65 years. He was known for his precision, expertise, and unwavering work ethic, earning the respect of all who worked alongside him.

For 37 years, Richard served in the U.S. Army National Guard as a member of the infantry division, demonstrating a commitment to his country that mirrored his devotion to his family. As a member of Fair Oaks United Methodist Church, Richard's faith guided him through life, informing his actions and connections with those around him.

Family was central to Richard's life; he cherished holiday gatherings at home and treasured the time spent with his grandchildren - Jessica Woodard, Rebecca Gilley (Payton), Rachael Perdue (Hunter), Andrew Cunningham (Anastasiia), and Aalyah Gremillion. His joy multiplied with the arrival of five great-grandchildren: Haven, Paidyn, Amelia, Amyr, and Riley.

Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, Virginia "Jennie" Hemmer Cunningham; son Andy Cunningham (Marlene); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who were touched by his kindness and warmth.

He rejoins his parents, A.J. and Minnie Raines Cunningham; son Jerry Cunningham; sister Mary Cunningham; and brothers Robert, Gene, Clarence, and Allen Cunningham in eternal rest.

Richard Cunningham will be remembered as a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a kind soul whose presence made a lasting impact on his family and community. His legacy of love, hard work, and passion for life will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.

A visitation will be held Monday, January 12, 2026 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm with a service immediately following. A graveside service will be held the at 2:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
