Marvin Andrew Davis, of Westborough, formerly of Framingham and Marlborough passed away quietly in his sleep on September 26, 2023. He was 88 years old.
Marvin was born in Toledo, OH the son of George O. Davis (SC) and Ruth B. Davis (Patterson) (OH). He attended Macomber High School in Toledo and was the first of his family to graduate from college. Marvin earned a Bachelors in Engineering Physics from the University of Toledo and a Masters in Engineering from the University of Buffalo. He was a 50 year member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
Marvin was a pioneer in Computer Software Engineering with a career spanning over forty years. He was a proud, 50 year, member of IEEE and held a Professional Engineer's license. He spent much of his career with Raytheon Corporation working on radar systems.
Marvin was a devoted son, brother, husband and father. He met his future wife Carolyn at church when he was just 16 years old. They were married in 1957 and enjoyed 66 years of marriage. Together they raised three wonderful children Linda, Gary and Ann. Marvin could often be heard bragging about his childrens' accomplishments.
Marvin truly enjoyed traveling with Carolyn. Over the years he dragged his family on numerous camping and hiking trips faithfully recording all trips in home movies. For many years on Memorial Day weekends he organized a church camping trip to Webb's campground on Martha's Vineyard, always contributing his famous BBQ chicken. He spent many summers camping on the Vineyard with his family. Eventually Marvin and Carolyn bought a summer home there which they maintained for 40 years. On the Vineyard he instilled a love of sailing in Linda and Gary, teaching them to sail in his trusty Sunfish. He also took up windsurfing, an activity he shared with his children. Marvin was happiest when sitting on a sandy beach, reading a good book, surrounded by his family.
Marvin was an active member of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Framingham and later the Unitarian Universalist Congregational Society of Westborough. In keeping with his faith, he was a dedicated Liberal. He was very active in politics, including serving on the Framingham town meeting, running the local campaign office for George McGovern and campaigning for many other candidates during his lifetime. In his later years it was common to see Marvin watching his liberal political talk shows on TV. Even with his fading memory, he was able to record his shows and view them at his leisure.
Marvin had a passion for bridge, and was a gold life master. He owned season's tickets for the Boston Patriots and followed them faithfully through all the really bad years as well as the good. He would rarely miss watching a Patriots game. He also loved to watch the Red Sox and basketball. Early dates with Carolyn entailed going to a diner for milkshakes and french fries following school basketball games. This love evolved into a long, happy, marriage with many evenings spent watching the Boston Celtics together.
Marvin was retired for 26 years. In his retirement he continued with his fondness bridge and was a SHINE volunteer who helped senior citizens with their taxes and other financial concerns. He had several cocker spaniels and was an avid dog lover. He and Carolyn traveled all over the world. Marvin was devoted to his family and he was most concerned for his wife in his final years. He made certain that Carolyn would be well taken care of after he was no longer able to do so.
Marvin is best described as a kind, caring and compassionate man with an indomitable spirit and a zest for life. He was extremely generous and devoted to his family, friends and those who were less fortunate. He was also a funny man who loved his family and cocktail hour. Marvin will truly be missed by his family, friends and all those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, brother Daniel (Lin) Davis, children Gary (Shelley) Davis, and Ann Davis, granddaughter Heather (MIchael) Douglass, and great-grandson Winston Douglass, nieces and nephews Jennifer Higgins, Robert Higgins Jr., Jerry Davis, and Sarah Krietemeyer. He was predeceased by his sister Marilyn (Robert) Higgins and daughter Linda Davis (Richard) Thomson.
Donations to honor his life can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. https://www.uusc.org/
