Marvin Dellhardt Felan, 89,
Minot, ND, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Trinity Hospital in Minot surrounded by family.
Marvin Felan was born on September 27, 1933, in
Kenmare, ND, to Arthur and Marie (Anderson) Felan. He was raised on the family farm in Kandiyohi Township west of Kenaston ND.
Marvin attended a one room country school walking 1.5 miles with his brothers and sister: uphill both ways. On bad winter days, their Dad would take them to school with a team of horses and a sled. He left the farm in his late teens and worked construction building various types of residential housing in Minnesota, Illinois, and Mississippi. He returned to Minot in the late 50's and worked construction at the Minot Air Force Base. He was soon introduced to Mary Nell Behm by a mutual friend. He eventually was employed by the Behm family enterprises where he work for 30+ years. He started hauling bulk/bottle propane for Behm's Propane and eventually managed the propane operations.
Marvin was united in marriage to Mary Nell Behm at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Minot on September 4, 1961. They were blessed with two daughters and a son. Sadly, Mary Nell passed away August 6, 1966. On December 29, 1967, he married Marie E. McKinzie at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. It was really a package deal, as three small children were included in the marriage. The couple made their home west of Minot behind Behm's Truckstop and eventually built and moved into a house located in SW Minot.
In the mid 80's, Marvin and Marie purchased the heating & cooling Minot Coleman operations from the Behm Family Corporation and incorporated the operations as M&M Service. Upon Marvin's retirement in 1991 from Behm Family Corporation and M&M Service, he and his wife moved to Odessa TX to be near his bother Andrew Felan. From there, they would travel to various state and federal parks acting as summer camp hosts. They eventually ended the camping excursions and purchased a winter home in
Apache Junction, AZ. For many years, they enjoyed wintering in
Apache Junction, AZ and spending summers in
Minot, ND. They eventually moved into Brentmore (Elison) Assisted Living of Minot in fall 2017. For the past 5 years, Marvin enjoyed the companionship and professionalism that Elison provided. He was known for his smile, wisdom, and his rich, good sense of humor. He was understanding of others, compassionate and caring.
Marvin and his wife often reflected on his Swedish heritage and her time in Sweden as an IFYE (which included several trips to Sweden to visit family and friends) and their involvement with the Minot Scandinavian Heritage Association. They acted as Fundraising Chairmen for the 30 foot tall Dala horse located at the Minot Scandinavian Heritage Park.
Marvin enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing and hunting trips, watching Twins baseball, cheering for teams that played against the Vikings, puzzles, and games of shuffleboard when wintering in AZ. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Loyal Order of Moose, and Catholic Fraternal Organization Knights of Columbus where he participated as a Knight. He and
his wife loved to travel and would take many summer trips with the children ensuring the travels involved state, national, and/or world square dancing events.
