Marvin Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Strickland & Family Cremations & Funeral Services on Jan. 20, 2026.
Marvin Glenn Johnson, 64, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in the comfort of his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Marvin was born on March 11, 1961, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and spent most of his childhood in Glyndon, Minnesota. He was the son of the late Freeman Keith Johnson and Ileen Judd Johnson.

In 1982, Marvin married the love of his life, Cathy Taninatz Johnson, and together they built a life centered on caring for each other and the simple joy of being at home together-Marvin's favorite place of all.

Marvin proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 18 years, achieving the rank of Machinist Mate Chief. His service included assignments in Mayport, Florida; New London, Connecticut; Mount Dora, Florida; and ultimately Virginia Beach, Virginia. He frequently worked on submarines and completed several missions, including Operation Desert Storm. Following his military retirement, Marvin continued his strong work ethic as an HVAC technician and later worked in retail.

Marvin loved cooking, action movies, and was a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings. As a youth, he enjoyed baseball, hunting, and fantasy novels. Genuine, loyal, and independent by nature, he always strove to live life on his own terms.

He was preceded in death by his father, Freeman Johnson, and his brother, Howard Johnson.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; his mother, Ileen Johnson; and his siblings: Karl Johnson, Ann (Greg) Davis, Karen Johnson, Brian (Cindy) Johnson, Mark (Julie) Johnson, Kristen Elder, and Jennifer (Craig) Johnson-Parker, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held by the family later in the year.
