Mary "Mavis" Baker (nee Phillips) transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday, October 24, 2025, while at Cotter House in Worthington, Ohio. She was 87 years old. Mavis was the youngest of six children born to James and Eliza Phillips in rural eastern Kentucky. She is preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings except her brother Dennis Phillips of Plain City, Ohio.
The focus of her life was faith, family, and fellowship. She lived by her faith and was a member of Franklin United Brethren Church for many years where she sang in the choir and supported the church's ministry with her time, talents and resources. As a daughter, sister, aunt, mother and grandmother, family was very important to her. Whenever someone came to visit her, there were always hot homemade chocolate chip cookies quickly ready for her guests.
During her lifetime, Mavis worked in administrative roles for the State of Ohio and the Union Fork & Hoe, and as a financial administrator for Design Group Architects in Columbus, Ohio, from where she retired after nearly 30 years. While her career was focused on business, her favorite pastime was singing. For nearly 10 years she sang several times a month with a local band, Encore, which traveled between local nursing and assisted living facilities entertaining the residents. She loved chatting with the residents and struck up long term friendships with several. She will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents and five siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband and sweetheart of 56 years, Richard (Dick)Baker in 2013.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (James) Harrison, her grandson, Gabriel Harrison, and his fiancé Ashley Sattler, all of Columbus, Ohio, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins all over the country whom Mavis loved dearly.
A special thank you to the entire team at Cotter House Worthington and National Church Residence Hospice Support Services for their excellent care and kindness as they helped Mavis through her final journey.
Arrangements are being made for a private interment at Mifflin Cemetery in Gahanna, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, food or other remembrances, please support Dementia & Alzheimer research or the non-profit of your choice in memory of Mavis.
