Mary Ellen (Preston) Barends of Sparta, Michigan, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 8th 2023. She was born to Myron and Mildred (Dakens) Anderson on September 9, 1932 in Sparta, Michigan.
Mary enjoyed quilting and camping with family and friends. She also enjoyed baking and spending time watching Halmark movies. Mary was an insurance agent at Glen S. Bradford Insurance Company for many years.
Mary is survived by her children, Rob (Kay) Preston, Del (Teri) Preston, Kyle Preston, and Bart Preston, grandchildren, Ben (Mallory) Preston, Sarah (Mark) Breen, Erin (Brandon) Sawyer, Danielle (Will) Cole, Nicole Davidson, Ashley Preston (Kendall Kaufman), Zan (Susan) Preston, Jo (Darrel) Morris, and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris Plescher, Cheryl Sutherland, Edna (Erwin) Evans, sister-in-law, Lori Preston, Noreen Beuschel, and special life-long friend, Eileen Shoemaker.
Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Preston, second husband, James Barends, and several other family members.
The family would like to thank Emmanuel Hospice and the Meadowlark Retirement memory care team for their care and compassion while Mary was living there.
There will be a time of visitation from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church located at 1225 12 Mile Road NW, Sparta, Michigan. The funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Peace Lutheran. There will be an additional one hour of visitation prior to the service.
Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to Emmanuel Hospice, Meadowlark Retirement - Memory Care Unit, or the food pantry at Peace Lutheran Church.
