Mary Betty Bass

Mrs. Mary Betty Solomon Bass of Dan River Church Rd, South Boston died Monday, May 12, 2025 at the age of 93. She was born on October 25, 1931 to the late James Otey Solomon and Elsie Burton Solomon and was married to the late J. Dean Bass.

Mrs. Bass was a homemaker and a seamstress at Leggett’s making beautiful draperies that graced many Halifax County homes. With her husband, she gardened, grew hay, gourds, and pumpkins that they sold by the honor system in their front yard. She was a faithful member of Dan River Baptist Church serving on many committees and active in the church choir. She was known for her radiant smile, happy laugh, and kindness towards all.

Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Bass Hinson and husband, Warren Hinson of Chapel Hill, NC; a son, Rickey Dean Bass and wife, Verna of Garden City Beach, SC; six grandchildren, Josh Hinson, Ryan Hinson, Caroline Hinson Flory, Christi Youngblood, Lee Rudisill, and Tyler Bass; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Weldon Solomon.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 4:00 PM at Dan River Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Knight, former pastor and family friend officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
