Obituary for Mary Marlene Bassett (née Lazard)
February 4, 1945 – August 21, 2025
Mary Marlene Bassett, born on February 4, 1945, in Opelousas, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, in Houston, Texas. She was surrounded by the love of her family and friends, who will forever cherish her memory.
Mary was a remarkable woman whose life was characterized by her ambition, warmth, and unwavering strength. After earning her credentials as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), she devoted her career to caring for others, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of her patients and colleagues. Her compassionate nature and commitment to nursing were evident throughout her esteemed career until her retirement.
Throughout her life, Mary experienced both great love and deep loss. She outlived her mother, her beloved husband, and her only daughter-yet she continued to live with grace, purpose, and humor. In her final chapter, she battled cancer with quiet courage, never complaining despite her pain. Instead, she brought laughter and light to those around her, even in the hardest moments.
As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary was the cornerstone of her family. She is survived by her beloved granddaughter Bianca H., her grandson Diante P., and granddaughter Ashley H., as well as her cherished great-grandchildren. Her family will remember her as a source of strength, laughter, and love-always ready with a kind word or a witty remark that could lift anyone's spirits.
Mary's personality was a rare blend of ambition, resilience, and deep care for others. Whether sharing joy with loved ones or lending a helping hand, she exemplified compassion, humor, and generosity. Her legacy lives on in the lives of those she touched, and especially in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward her love and light.
As we celebrate the life of Mary Marlene Bassett, let us remember her laughter, her kindness, and the mark she left on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was truly a remarkable woman who will be dearly missed.
The family will be celebrating Mary's life privately. However, friends and loved ones are warmly invited to share any memories, stories, or condolences in her honor, as we commemorate the rich and beautiful life she lived.
