Mary Virginia Burton - more lovingly known as "Peggy" - was born on February 20th, 1944, in Nassawadox, Virginia, to the late Bernie and Margie Boggs. On April 7th, 2025, she was called to her eternal rest at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.
Peggy was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools and later dedicated thirty-eight years of faithful service to Tyson Foods. Although, her real passion and commitment was in the love she felt for her family and friends.
On March 12th, 1962, she married Lewis Burton, Sr. For sixty-three years, they shared a union rooted in true love and faith. Their home was a warm and welcoming place, where laughter was always close by and a good meal was never too far away. Peggy was the soul of her family.
A longtime and faithful member of Burton's Chapel Independent Methodist Church in Melfa, Virginia, she found deep joy in worship and was a proud member of both the Senior Choir and the Gospel Chorus. She enjoyed singing and praising the Lord every chance she got.
To know her was to be loved deeply and unconditionally. She had a kind, humble spirit with a sense of humor that touched the lives of those around her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Lewis Burton, Sr. of Melfa, VA; her four children, Lewis Burton, Jr. (Dawn) of Glen Burnie, MD, Antonio Burton of Philadelphia, PA, Bill Burton (Yolly) of Kuwait, and Thyessa Burton-Scarborough (Robert) of Virginia Beach, VA, as well as her bonus son, Marvin Upshur (Priscilla) of Portsmouth, VA; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernie Boggs, Jr. (Cathy) of Killeen, TX; one sister/cousin, Yvonne Nedab (Dalbert) of Wachapreague, VA and a niece and nephew; and a host of in-laws and cousins. Among them are her special family and friends, Emmerell Williams, Patricia Upshur, Peggy Bassett, Loretta Johnson, and Kecia Burton.
While her physical presence will be missed beyond words, her spirit - her love, her lessons, her legacy - will continue to live on in every one of us. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Mary Virginia "Peggy" Burton (Boggs), please visit our Tree Store.
