Mary Byrum Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wood Funeral Service - Chase City on Jan. 12, 2026.
Mary Duke Byrum, 70, went home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2026. She was born on September 15, 1955, in Suffolk, Virginia. She graduated from Suffolk High School in 1974.

She was predeceased by her parents, William Ralph Duke, Sr., and Billie Greene Duke.

Mary was an avid reader, and enjoyed her many animals and living in the country. She moved to Chase City in 2008, where she spent her days raising Golden Retrievers, goats, horses, and many other farm animals. She especially loved looking after her many cats and dogs. More than her animals, she loved the Lord with all her heart, and her relationship with Him was the most important aspect of her life. She also dearly loved her family and spending time with them.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 51 years and thelove of her life, Larry Wayne Byrum; her son Jason Wayne Byrum (Amy), daughter Michelle Nicole Byrum; grandchildren Jonathan Thomas Byrum, Ashley Rose Byrum, Jessica Lynn Byrum, Abigail Marie Byrum, and Julianna Everett Byrum. She is also survived by her brother, William (Bill) Ralph Duke, Jr. and sister, Dianne Duke Williams, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Woodland Cemetery in Chase City, Virginia, with Pastor Shane Bost officiating. Wood Funeral Service is handling the arrangements.

To the family of Mary Duke Byrum, please accept our deepest condolences to your family. Although we didn´t know you personally, the Duke´s name was a good name in Suffolk. That certainly highlights the importance of making a good name with God first, then it trickles in the community. - Proverbs 22:1
