Mary Dorothy MacDonald Canavan of West Scranton died Tuesday at home after an illness. Her husband, the late Eugene F. Canavan, preceded her in death in 2003.

A daughter of the late Cletus and Dorothy Nolan MacDonald, she was a member of St. Patrick's Parish. Born in the Bellevue section of Scranton, she was a graduate of West Scranton High School, where she was a majorette. Prior to retirement, she was employed by Capitol Records and as an administrative assistant at Anemostat. She also worked for many years for Aramark, in the lunchroom of the former John Marshall School in Scranton.

Mary Doe was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took pride in her home and her garden. She enjoyed being active and was an avid swimmer and golfer. She also loved to travel around the world, and took many memorable trips with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered, by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen Shannon, Dallas; a son, Mark Canavan and wife, Lisa, Dalton; four grandchildren, Kirsten Quigley, Sarah Chylak, and Brianna and Shane Shannon; two great-grandchildren, Lillian Grace and Jordan David; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her three brothers, Cletus II, Thomas "Macker" and Donald MacDonald.

The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 1403 Jackson St., to be celebrated the Rev. Richard Fox, followed by interment in Cathedral Cemetery. The family requests that those attending the funeral Friday should proceed directly to the church.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., 18509, or stjosephscenter.org. To email condolences, please visit the funeral home website.
