Mary Ellen Moon passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026 at the age of 83. She was born on March 3, 1943, daughter of Edward and Emma Angley of Brewer, Maine and was a graduate of John Bapst High School. She went on to earn her degree from Washington State Teachers College in 1965 and later achieved her Masters degree in Education in 1993 from USM. In the fall of 1964, Mary Ellen met her soulmate, David and later married in 1970. Together they shared a “spark” that would last a lifetime. Raising two children, David and Betsy, they became proud grandparents to four amazing grandchildren.
Mary Ellen was a teacher who was beloved by generations of children. She began her teaching career in Kittery, Maine, with a brief time in Florida, before finding her home in Gorham, where she became a pillar of White Rock School for 29 years. While there, her treasured White Rock colleagues became part of her extended family and Halloween parades, tea parties, book clubs and the holiday hayrides & bonfires became treasured traditions. After retiring in 2011, her love of teaching continued as she went on to substitute teach, often in Betsy’s kindergarten classroom, and volunteer in Gorham Adult Education teaching English Language Learners. And throughout her life, she never stopped maintaining and nurturing her many friendships.
Mary Ellen found such joy in all children but her grandchildren brought her the most joy of all! Whether it was sleepovers, a trip to Fort Williams or simply sitting on the floor reading together, she was at her happiest when spending time with her “grandbabies.”
Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband David of 55 years, her sister Kathleen (Terry) Saunders, son David (Nicole) and daughter Betsy (Ray) and grandchildren Matthew, Emma, Jonathan and Alyssa. She is also survived by her three nephews and numerous cousins.
The family is deeply grateful for the many compassionate caregivers who provided so much of themselves for Mary Ellen’s wellbeing.
In lieu of flowers, and in recognition of her lifelong love of reading, donations can be made to Baxter Memorial Library 71 South St. Gorham, ME 04038, mentioning “Youth Services” on the memo line.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 PM on Friday, April 3, 2026 at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee 35 Church St. in Westbrook, Maine.
