Mary Veronica Handlin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Veronica Handlin who left us peacefully on August 17, 2025, just days shy of her 77th birthday. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on August 23, 1948, Mary grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, where she developed her indomitable spirit and resilience, inspiring all who knew her. Despite facing challenges, Mary led a life filled with joy and purpose. She worked diligently as a presser in the dry cleaning industry at Admirals, showcasing her exceptional work ethic and dedication. Around 2009, Mary and her husband, Mark, made the move to beautiful Saint Augustine, Florida, seeking to be closer to her cherished family. When Mark passed away in 2010, Mary moved into Alpha Omega Miracle Home where she received love and support in a Christian setting. After a short time, Mary became ill and required hospital care. After a brief stay at the hospital, she moved into Bayview Nursing Home. There she found a loving home surrounded by care of her sister-in-law Mona Drainer, niece Darlyne Johnson, and nephew James (Skip) Drainer all whom she adored. While residing at the nursing home, Mary became very popular and had many friends. Her vibrant spirit lit up every room, and despite being confined to a wheelchair, she was the life of the party and known as the best dancer in the home. Her ability to find joy and connection in each moment truly inspired those around her. A lifelong catholic, Mary was a woman of deep faith and enjoyed the worship services held at her care center. Mary leaves behind her loving brother, Bruce A. Drainer and his wife Nancy of Wilmington; sister-in-law, Mona Drainer of St. Augustine; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. Each of them carries with them cherished memories of her warm spirit and encouragement. A celebration of life service to honor her remarkable journey and the love she shared with all will be held at Applebees on Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Mary's name to Alpha Omega Miracle Home ensuring her spirit of inspiration continues to touch lives. As we mourn the loss of our beloved Mary, Let us remember the light she brought into our world and honor her legacy of resilience and love. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
